On his way to his father’s, Lucius Scaurus turned into a little alley off the street of the sandal-makers, and stopped at a certain shop which he knew of old. There he showed the dice-box to a man well practised in the art of valuation. The man named a sum; Lucius objected. The figure was raised, fractionally.

‘Wouldn’t you like to throw the dice just once more?’ asked the man.

Lucius’ hand closed on the box. He threw.

The man started. ‘Three aces. Jactus damnosus!’ he exclaimed. ‘The worst of throws! Try again.’

Lucius did so. Again three aces. Both men paled.

The pawnbroker pushed the box back to Lucius. ‘Go, go quickly. Find an altar and sacrifice. The gods are angry, young master!’

Lucius took up the box and, at another three aces, left the shop cursing. To restore himself he visited a wine bar, drank, and returned to the family home without sacrificing.
